January-April 2010

  •  In its English edition dated March 5, 2010, Israeli newspaper Ha'aretz published an article entitled "Capital Anglos mobilize against practice of spitting at Christians". Author Raphael Ahren describes the problematic phenomenon of Christians being spat at and the attempts at improving the situation, including the abovementioned March 15th event, a collaboration between Kehillat Yedidya, ICCI and the Jerusalem Center for Jewish-Christian Relations.

  • The Florida Jewish Journal published an article by veteran columnist Rabbi Bruce Warshal on February 23, 2010. The article, entitled "It’s time to stop Islam-bashing", followed a lecture by ICCI director Dr. Ron Kronish in Boca Raton in January and highlighted the need to become less prejudiced against the Muslim citizens of the U.S.
  • An article by Dr. Ron Kronish entitled "Notes from a Humanistic, Liberal Zionist: A Personal Perspective" was published as part of the Presbyterian Church (USA)'s Middle East Study Committee report in March 2010. Dr. Kronish offers his views on Jewish identity and Zionism, past and present.

  • Prof. Shalom Goldman, a lecturer at the Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, who is currently in

    Authority's IBA news program    , in April, and was also broadcast on the Middle East Television
    (METV)    .and featured online on April 5, 2010. Erin Viner talked to Dr. Kronish and Fr. McGarry about
    interfaith dialogue in troubled times and its impact.
  • Dr. Ron Kronish was interviewed by Polish TV (the TVP1 channel, for the program "Wiadomosci") and radio on April 4, 2010. The interviews revolved around the connections between the Jewish holiday of Passover and the Christian holiday of Easter and Jewish-Christian relations in Jerusalem.

October-December 2009

  • The Indianapolis Star (www.indiestar.com) published an article by Robert King on October 23, 2009, entitled "Different religious backgrounds don't rule out trust". The article highlights the importance of "the other peace process", a process that involves the intensive, long-term personal engagement of people who are neither politicians nor lawyers.   • The Ottawa Citizen (www.ottawacitizen.com) published an article by Jennifer Campbell on October 26, 2009, entitled "Finding common ground". The article includes highlights from Dr. Kronish and Kadi Zibdeh's appearance at Temple Israel in Ottawa.   • The Jewish Week (www.thejewishweek.com) published an article by Merri Rosenberg on October 27, 2009, entitled "Figuring out how to live together". The article includes highlights from Dr. Kronish and Kadi Zibdeh's appearance at the Westchester Reform Temple in Scarsdale, MA. Among the topics discussed were the stereotypes each side has about the other, dialogue as a religious obligation and the role of interreligious dialogue. In the words of Dr. Kronish: “We’re not politicians. We’re not here to write the treaty between Israel and Palestine. For us, engaging in interfaith dialogue is not an academic or intellectual exercise. We’re bringing people together to live together. The focus of our discussions is religious, educational and spiritual.   • The Three Faiths Forum (www.threefaithsforum.org.uk) published an article by Joshua M. Z. Stanton on December 8, 2009, entitled "Avoiding Meaningless Dialogue". The article highlights the need for raising the quality of interreligious dialogue and broaching "the difficult topics that preclude truly positive interactions, without provoking heated and counterproductive discussions."   • America Magazine, the National Catholic Weekly, quoted Dr. Kronish in an article by Drew Christiansen dated July 31, 2009. The article, entitled "Hate lit in the IDF", reported on extremists spreading libelous allegations about the Vatican to Israeli soldiers.

  • A book review by Dr. Kronish titled "Learning from Luna" was published in the Jerusalem Post on September 3, 2009. The review focuses on the autobiography of Ms. Luna Kaufman, a Holocaust survivor who devoted her life to helping others and became a notable activist in the field of Jewish-Christian relations in the U.S.

  • On August 14, 2009, the members of ICCI's delegation to Australia – Mr. Jaber, Ms. Shubeita and Dr. Weissman – were the guests of journalists and broadcasters Terry Lane and Jon Faine on their ABC Melbourne Radio program 'Conversation Hour'.   • During her stay in Australia, Dr. Debbie Weissman contributed an article to the popular Australian news portal theage.com.au.   • Finally, ICCI's delegation to Australia in September 2009 is discussed on the Australia/Israel & Jewish Affairs Council website, in an article by Jeremy Jones, published on September 25, 2009. The article, entitled "The Last Word: Food for Thought", focuses on the delegation's contribution to changing misconceptions and promoting interreligious understanding in Australia. Specifically, it describes how a number of Australian Muslims attended functions in which the delegation members spoke or heard them on the radio, and were inspired by that experience to rethink preconceptions about the reality of daily life in Israel. Much media attention was drawn to the controversial speech of Sheikh Tayseer Tamimi, Chief Islamic Judge in the Palestinian Authority, during this event. 'Israelis think religious heads can ease tensions' by Ina Friedman,  Jerusalem Report, January 8, 2007

 

While a recent poll on inter-communal relations shows that distrust between the country's Arabs is at an alarmingly high level, it also reflects the belief that religious leaders can play an active role in mitigating it. The findings were released at a December 14 conference on cooperation on social issues among Jewish, Muslim and Christian religious and political leaders held by an association called Kedem: Voices for Religious Conciliation in Israel, which also commissioned the poll.  'Sheikhs, rabbis and priests battle together in fight against the same demons' by Amiram Barkat, Haaretz, December 17, 2006

The Holocaust-denial theories aired last week in Iran were denounced Friday from an unexpected source - in a statement released by sheikhs of the Islamic Movement in Israel. Simultaneously, Religious Zionist rabbis issued a statement denouncing damage done to the Muslim cemetery in the center of Jerusalem in the construction of the Museum of Tolerance.  Read more...

JERUSALEM — As the summer’s war raged in Lebanon and along Israel’s northern border, Arab and Jewish young adults were meeting at the Ramat Rachel Conference Center in Jerusalem. What had been planned as an exercise in coexistence began to break down after Hizbullah leader Hassan Nasrallah gave a speech denying the Jewish state’s right to exist.
